JEDDAH: Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel is chairman and CEO at Abdul Latif Jameel Co. Ltd. and Abdul Latif Jameel International (DMCC), founded by his father in 1945. Italian opera star Andrea Bocelli, who performed in the Kingdom for the first time on Friday, said it was Jameel who had encouraged him to set up a charitable organization for music and science. Jameel is a member of the global advisory board at the Council on Foreign Relations and, in 2008, was appointed by King Abdullah as an economic council member and board member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jeddah. He is a trustee of the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London, at the invitation of the Prince of Wales, and is a keen supporter of the arts. He completed a project to restore the Islamic gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum. It was opened in July 2006 by Prince Charles under the new name of the Jameel Gallery of Islamic Art. In 2008 Jameel received the highest award in the Kingdom, the Order of King Abdul Aziz, from the late monarch in recognition of his personal contribution to job creation for young Saudi men and women.  The family’s sustainable social enterprise organization, which was established in 2003, is called Community Jameel. It has created more than 549,000 job opportunities in Saudi Arabia. Jameel holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and also studied mathematics at Sophia University in Tokyo, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2011.
