Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Monday that there has been no agreement so far for Syrias return to the group. The leagues chief made the remarks after meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun at Baabda Palace. Aboul Gheit said an agreement would lead to an Arab foreign ministers meeting on the subject but "until now, I havent felt such a development or understanding." Syrias membership in the 22-member Arab League was suspended in 2011 after the Syrian regimes military crackdown on protesters calling for reforms. The protests later turned into an armed insurgency and a full-blown civil war, now in its eight year. Talks of Syria’s possible return to the league heated up in recent months mainly ahead of the Arab Economic and Social Development summit, which was held in Beirut in January. Aboul Gheit is in Beirut to congratulate Lebanese officials on the new government’s formation around ten days ago.
