A Sudanese man was killed on Sunday after suffocating with tear gas fired by police during a demonstration in Khartoum called by the Sudanese Professional Association and the opposition Freedom and the Change Coalition. The Central Committee of Sudan Doctors (CCSD), which has been treating protest victims, said a street fruit vendor, 62, died from tear gas inhalation after all attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. It denounced the excessive use of tear gas as a lethal weapon in its stifling form, noting that it has inflicted serious damage on a number of protesters and citizens. It also held the ruling regime responsible for what it called “war crimes.” According to witnesses, demonstrators took to the streets in the northern district of Bahari in Khartoum, responding to a call by the Freedom and the Change Coalition. Police forces dispersed the masses by using tear gas excessively, they explained, after deploying security forces in the capital to prevent the demonstrators from rallying. Despite the heightened security precautions and deployment of dozens of riot control vehicles, hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets to demand President Omar al-Bashir to step down along with his government. Other smaller protests took place in the capital. The Freedom and the Change Coalition was established when the Sudanese Professional Association, the National Consensus Alliance, the Nidaa Al Sudan Alliance and a number of opposition political and civil organizations gathered and joined the opposition rally, which has organized and led demonstrations and protests in the country since December 19. The CCSD condemned the deliberate use of tear gas bombs and its firing from close proximity to the demonstrators heads, which has caused severe injuries. A demonstrator told Asharq Al-Awsat that she and her fellow protesters will not give up and will not stop the rallies until the regime is toppled.
