The Chairman of King Faisal Foundations Center for Research and Islamic Studies Turki al-Faisal stressed that Saudi Arabia’s campaign for openness reaffirms that the Kingdom is on the “right track”. Partaking in the Misk Media Forum 2019, which launched in Riyadh on Tuesday with over 50 speakers and 30 discussion sessions, al-Faisal reasserted that, since its inception, Saudi Arabia has faced hostilities for its difference in traditional values and religion. Al-Faisal, speaking at the session titled "Employing Media in Confronting Chaos and Enhancing Stability," focused on the seriousness of dealing with the media, noting that the media in the West is largely based on “excitement.” He stressed that ineffective fact checking registered by media outlets presents a serious risk, not to mention cyber wars. Revamping Saudi Arabia’s image, according to al-Faisal, needs a larger effort. He also stressed that the Kingdom has the necessary tools to communicate with others, noting the Information Ministry’s efforts are relentless despite a long road lying ahead. “We have and continue to invite all the world to come visit and see the Kingdom in its true form, the image of tolerance, and in this regard we have established different programs, hosted young people from around the world and invited them to attend various festivals held in the Kingdom,” al-Faisal noted. He added that Saudi youth are the future, urging them to defend their homeland on all social platforms, stressing at the same time the need to preserve the values that characterize society and protect them from alien ideas that do not align with Saudi values. On the other hand, al-Faisal explained that the rise of modern-day social media platform is a mixed blessing--on one hand it is useful and harmful on the other. He noted that the latest digital developments in the media have rendered information ministries useless and even a negative influencer at times. Al-Faisal pointed out that the traditional and modern media in the West have been so arbitrarily influential that it had triggered the need for regulation in some countries looking to sustain their existing order.
