Saudi Arabia has been working to improve the rehabilitation process of children recruited by Houthi militias in Yemen’s internal conflict. King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) organized on Wednesday a workshop entitled, “Developing the rehabilitation project of recruited and war-affected children in Yemen” at King Saud University in Riyadh. The workshop was attended by KSRelief General Supervisor Dr. Abdullah al-Rabeeah and Yemeni Minister of Human Rights Dr. Mohammed Askar. Rabeeah said the workshop aims at raising the efficiency of the project to come up with recommendations that will contribute to improving the performance of the program and maximizing its outputs according to expectations. Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, Rabeeah slammed child recruitment by Iran-backed Houthis, an inhumane act that violates human rights and is criminalized by the UN.  The UN has commended efforts exerted by KSRelief for the rehabilitation of child soldiers, he added. He pointed that the project’s first phase resulted in rehabilitating 400 children psychologically, socially, and educationally and bringing them back to normal life, noting that it came in line with supporting and raising awareness among more than 9,600 parents. The project was praised by the United Nations for its strategic objectives in supporting world stability, he said. KSRelief was selected by the UN to be a member of an international team to cooperate in rehabilitating recruited children in four continents, Rabeeah explained, noting that the project consists of 16 specialists with sufficient experience. The workshop was held in light of reports showing that Houthis have recruited more than 20,000 children during Yemen’s war. Preserving childhood is significant in building the future of generations, Rabeeah noted, stressing that this project is given priority on the Center’s humanitarian agenda.
