Head of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez al-Sarraj condemned on Tuesday “negative” foreign meddling in the country During a meeting with European Union ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions in Tripoli, he accused some countries, which he did not identify, of supplying weapons to the warring parties in the country. These arms supplies have prolonged and complicated the crisis, he said. The crisis, Sarraj continued, can be resolved through a political solution and holding elections on “sound constitutional foundations” so that the people can determine the fate of their country. Moreover, he hailed EU efforts to restore stability in Libya, stressing the importance of its reopening of diplomatic missions in the capital. For their part, the envoys hailed Sarraj’s statements for underlining the principles of the civil state and calling for the unification of sovereign institutions. They also underscored UN envoy Ghassan Salame’s efforts to hold a National Conference for Libya that would bring together all parties in order to reach a political solution to the impasse. Furthermore, they expressed their support for the meeting held in Abu Dhabi last month between Sarraj and Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar during which they agreed to hold elections in their country. Separately, Sarraj’s spokesman Mohammed al-Sallak denied in a terse Twitter post claims that the GNA chief had escaped an assassination attempt upon his return to Libya from a trip to Qatar. Sarraj had allegedly come under fire in Tripoli soon after he returned from his visit. In western Libya, Haftar dispatched new military reinforcements to areas under LNA control, revealed military sources. These movements have raised concerns that the army would advance on Tripoli. Haftar has not disclosed a date for such a potential operation, but his forces now control vast areas of Libya after they liberated the East and South from terrorist groups and criminal gangs.
