A plane caught fire on landing at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport on Tuesday, but all 100 passengers evacuated the aircraft unscathed, the head of Iran’s emergency department said on state television. Pir-Hossein Kolivand said the fire broke out after the plane’s landing gear did not open properly and was later brought under control. The airplane was a Fokker 100 belonging to Iran Air, the Fars news agency reported. The pilot was not able to open the back wheels of the plane and circled the airport attempting to open all the wheels before landing the plane on its body, according to Fars. Iran has witnessed a series of aviation accidents in recent years. Earlier this month, five people were killed when a rescue helicopter crashed into a utility pole in the western province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari. In January, an Iranian Boeing 707 cargo plane coming from Kyrgyzstan crashed while trying to land west of Tehran. In 2016, a helicopter belonged to the oil company crashed in the Caspian Sea, killing five onboard. In 2015, four died in a crash of a helicopter transferring an injured oil staffer to hospital from an offshore oil platform. Aircraft crashes have been blamed on Iran’s old fleet and years of international sanctions over the countrys nuclear program.
