Dr. Amr Shaat, Deputy Minister of Transport, submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Dr. Mustafa Madbouli, after informing Transport Minister Major General Kamel Al Wazir that he did not wish to remain in his post, sources in the Ministry of Transport said on Thursday, without specifying any reasons. The resignation of the deputy minister came a few days after Al Wazir dismissed Mustafa Sultan, deputy head of the railway authority for the financial sector. Shaat was appointed in the Ministry of Transport as an assistant for the railway and the subway in mid-February 2017, in parallel with the appointment of Dr. Hisham Arafat as minister of Transport. The latter resigned following the last incident at Egypt train station. At least 25 people were killed and 50 injured on February 27 when a major fire broke out after a speeding railcar crashed into a barrier at Cairos main train station, causing its fuel tank to explode. Following the incident at Ramses station in the center of the Egyptian capital, the Transport minister resigned, a cabinet statement said. The Egyptian authorities decided to detain 12 railway workers, on the background of investigations into the incident.
