An Egyptian court ruled to extend the detention of Aisha Al-Shater, the daughter of senior Muslim Brotherhood leader Khairat Al-Shater. Stretched out to 45 days, the detention extra time was approved in order to maintain ongoing investigations uninterrupted. Aisha, alongside her husband, faces charges of belonging to an outlawed terror organization and terror funding. Egyptian authorities blacklisted the Brotherhood as a terrorist organization in 2013. Investigations revealed that the cell, to which Aisha belonged, knowingly called for protests with anti-state sentiment. The Egyptian public prosecution also pressed charges such as engaging in public disinformation aimed at disrupting social peace and undermining confidence in the Egyptian state and its institutions. In parallel, Egypt’s appeals court adjourned its ruling on what is publicly known as the Imbaba terror cell case. Its members are seeking to appeal verdicts that include death penalties and life imprisonment, initially issued over charges of belonging to a terrorist group and possession of illegal arms. Last March, the Giza Criminal Court sentenced 10 of the Imbaba cell defendants to death and five to life in jail. Investigations revealed that the defendants had consciously formed an armed terrorist network in the wake of the June 30, 2013 revolution, tasked with securing riots organized by the Brotherhood in Giza and that they participated in anti-police violence such as bombing police stations and plotting the murder of local officers.
