Nidaa Tounes spokesman Manji al-Harbawi announced a decision to revamp the party’s politburo so that it includes 32 members. The move is meant to silence accusations of the party steering clear from diversity. Party members at the Tunisian party’s convention in Monastir unanimously adopted a final communique which prohibits engagement with any Islamist party, Harbawi said in an oblique hint at the political alliance forged with the Ennahda movement. He stressed that Nidaa is committed to its principles inspired by late President Habib Bourguiba on nationalism. Even more, the party will be stripping “partisan tourists,” a term coined for politicians and lawmakers who shift their alliances frequently, of their membership. Formed in 2012 by President Beji Caid Essebsi, Nidaa won the majority of seats in the October 2014 parliamentary election. The North African country is set to witness a major shakeup that will see the birth of a new central committee and politburo for Nidaa, as well. On Tuesday, after voting party members had cast their ballots, the party is expected to release a 217-member list which will form its new central committee and the 32 appointees for its politburo. Chairing Nidaa’s first election assembly, Samira Belkadhi said 34 electoral lists were submitted by Nidaa party members in total, and asserted that an electoral committee had been formed to avoid political divisions from emerging. On Saturday, Nidaa kickstarted its party convention with Essebsi as its guest of honor. The race for party leadership is witnessing a heated competition between three electoral lists headed by each of Essebsis son, Hafedh Essebsi, former education minister Néji Jalloul and Selma Elloumi. This convention is focused on establishing foundations for political stability within the party, and Tunisia as a whole, as well as appointing elected leaders for the first time since the founding of the party in 2012.
