Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed on Monday a number of regional issues including Libya and Sudan in light of Egypt’s chairmanship of the African Union (AU). Sisi discussed the unity and stability of Libya as well as Egypts support for efforts aiming at combating terror groups and extremist militias which pose threats not only to Libya but also to the stability and security of the entire Middle East and European countries, Presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement. Sisi also asserted that Egypt is closely following up developments in Sudan, pointing out that his country backs the choices of the Sudanese people. The president also expressed his aspiration to continue to promote and develop the distinguished relations between the two countries at all levels. For her part, Merkel expressed Berlin’s keenness on reaching a political solution to the Libyan crisis as part of a dialogue among the Libyan parties and stressed the importance of stepping up efforts to end the crisis in Libya. The phone call also touched on bilateral relations, in view of the growing level of ties between the two states. Further, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz left Cairo Monday after holding talks with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shukri with whom he discussed means to promote ties between Cairo and Warsaw. During his meeting with Czaputowicz, the Egyptian minister stressed cementing ties between Egypt and Poland in various fields and they mulled regional and international issues of mutual concern. Czaputowicz also met Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb.
