Swiss star fights for 2:44 hours to overcome the 106th-ranked Czech PRAGUE: Jil Teichmann, ranked 146th in the world, won her first WTA title on Saturday when she beat Karolina Muchova 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 6-4 in the Prague Open final. In a battle of qualifiers, the 21-year-old Swiss had to fight for two hours and 44 minutes to overcome the 22-year-old Czech, who is ranked 106th. “I"m just speechless, honestly,” Teichmann said after the match. “I just fought and fought. It was a great battle and I"m just relieved that it"s done.” Muchova saved six set points before Teichmann finally took the first. In the third set, the Swiss was twice a break down before finally prevailing. “I"m exhausted, but Kaja played a great match as well. I knew it was going to be a battle, but in the end, one has to win,” Teichmann added. Teichmann is the 20th different WTA champion in 21 events so far this season, according to the WTA. She will be in the top 100 for the first time on Monday. On Friday, Teichmann’s breakthrough week on the Tour stunned world No. 39 Barbora Strycova 6-3 6-0 in their semi-final. Teichmann fired 22 winners in the contest, doubling Strycova’s tally of 11, and finished with just 14 unforced errors to seal the victory in just over an hour. Making just her seventh WTA main draw appearance, Muchova was clinical in the opening set, executing four spectacular dropshot winners. Separately, Chile’s Cristian Garin sprung a second surprise in two days at the Munich Open on Saturday, beating third seed Marco Cecchinato 6-2, 6-4 to reach the final of the clay court ATP tournament. Garin, ranked 47 in the world, beat world No. 3 and two-time Munich champion Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals on Friday before continuing his fine form against Cecchinato in a semifinal which was repeatedly interrupted by rain. Ranked outside the top 200 just a year ago, Garin won his first ATP Tour title in Houston last month. The 22-year-old Chilean will face Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut or Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in Sunday’s final.
