Indonesian Air Force warplanes are participating in waking Muslims up on Java Island during the fasting month of Ramadan for the predawn meal of suhur. "It was a combined mission to wake people up for suhur before dawn," the local newspaper Kompas cited Air Force spokesperson Colonel Sus Yuris as saying. Yuris explained pilots are not allowed to fly while fasting after 10:00 a.m. The Air Force said on Twitter that the tradition was intended to establish a strong bond between the Indonesian Air Force and the people. However, the step did not please all the residents as some objected to the sound caused by the jets. One of them said: "I dont think this is necessary, as not all residents are Muslims and fasting. This is a time of rest for many people of other religions."
