The Cairo Criminal Court on Friday referred the cases of six members convicted of terrorism to the Grand Mufti, Egypts top religious authority, for a non-binding opinion on their execution. The defendants relate to a case involving a terror group of 70 suspects dubbed the Kerdasa Popular Resistance Committees by the media. With the ruling session slated for June 19, investigations have shown that the defendants participated in forming the terror cell and caring out terror activities throughout 2014 and 2015. Public Prosecution has charged all 70 members with counts of establishing and managing of a terror cell, stoking public disorder, subverting state institutions, the murder of three victims, including a national security police chief, illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and TNT grenades, and the use of force and violence against public officials. The Committees have targeted state, police and military institutions, as well as the government civil service facilities and public workers. Among the various crimes committed by the group was setting on fire a sewage station, a factory, and a company building in the village of Nahia, Giza. Community and youth centers in Kerdasa, Giza, were also targeted by arson, which resulted in the death of two victims. In the meantime, State Security Investigations received warrants to hold two terror suspects in custody for 15 days. The two defendants are facing charges of publishing false news about the political and economic situation in the country with the aim of disturbing civil peace. They are also believed to be operating on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is a group outlawed as a terrorist organization in Egypt.
