The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned Wednesday the decision by Moldovan Prime Minister and court-appointed interim President Pavel Filip to transfer his country’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. "The decision is a flagrant violation of international law, international legitimacy and the UN resolutions," the ministry said in a statement, adding that the outgoing PM is taking advantage of political uncertainty in his country to gain support from the US and Israel. The Ministry added that Filip is hiding behind the US and Israeli support and is violating international law and legitimacy to remain in power. Moldova’s political crisis stems from the elections in February when the opposition Socialist party won most seats but failed to gain a majority. Plahotniuc’s party then challenged the new government’s legitimacy, and was backed by the constitutional court, which ruled that the coalition had missed a June 7 deadline to form a new government. It insisted that the PM in charge was still Filip, who called for “snap elections” in September. On Monday, the Democratic party held a cabinet meeting and refused to leave the government building, while the Socialist-ACUM coalition led by Maia Sandu, held its first cabinet meeting in the offices of the parliament. Palestine’s Foreign Ministry stated that Moldova is a country that is still struggling for survival and seeking to have a place in Europe and the world, and rather than starting by adhering to international legitimacy and laws, Filip is adopting a different approach that puts it in the ranks of rogue states and subject to international legal accountability. The Ministry asserted it will coordinate with the new government in Moldova to bring down this hasty and illegal decision and help Moldova comply with international law and not to be dragged behind false promises by the occupying power. Moldova’s Filip-led government decided to “transfer the premises of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in the State of Israel to Jerusalem.” At the same time, it decided to approve the agreement on “the sale of the plot of land for the construction of the Embassy of the United States of America in the Republic of Moldova,” said the statement. Prime Minister of the “old” government Filip said during the session that the situation requires urgent adoption of these decisions “taking into account the political instability and uncertainty in the country, but also the latest political developments whereas one of the political parties that constantly blocked these 2 projects is attempting an illegal takeover of power.” “These are two commitments that we have previously undertaken and we want to make sure they will be respected, regardless of what happens after the snap elections,” he noted. Israel refrained from commenting on the transfer decision, as it seems to recognize that this is a desperate step for the Democratic Party, and that it has not been coordinated with the United States and Israel. However, president of the World Jewish Congress Robert Singer welcomed the move. To date, two countries have moved their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem: the United States and Guatemala, while Paraguay retracted its decision in this regard.
