Egypt’s state security prosecutor has remanded for questioning 11 political activists, journalists and a former lawmaker who were detained for “joining and participating in the funding of a terrorist group,” in a clear reference to the Muslim Brotherhood. The state prosecutor ordered them remanded in custody for 15 days. Egypts Interior Ministry said Tuesday that security forces raided 19 businesses – with a total turnover of 250 million Egyptian pounds - accused of funding a plot to target state institutions. Among the detainees were Zyad Elelaimy, a former legislator and member of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, Economist Omar el-Shenety and journalists Hossam Monis and Hisham Fouad. The Democratic Alliance, which consists of five parties, on Tuesday called for “the immediate release of the detainees.” It stressed in a statement that the suspects have no links with the Muslim Brotherhood, saying “all such rumors are false.”
