Jordanian Prime Minister Omar Razzaz told his Palestinian counterpart, Mohammad Shtayyeh, on Sunday that an economic deal cannot be a substitute for a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. During a meeting with Shtayyeh in Amman, Razzaz said that the "road to peace is clear" and must be based upon the creation of an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital. He said that "there is no compromise or project or deal that will divert us from these priorities." In Bahrain last month, the US promoted its plan calling for $50 billion of investment in Palestinian areas and neighboring Arab countries. The Palestinians accuse the US of trying to buy off their national aspirations. During their meeting Sunday, the two prime ministers stressed the depth of Jordanian-Palestinian relations, a statement carried by Jordan’s Petra state news agency said. It quoted Shtayyeh as saying that his visit to Amman at the head of a high-ranking delegation is aimed at consolidating the Palestinians’ Arab belonging, and is part of their strategy in gradually distancing themselves from their relationship with the Israeli occupation. He added that technical committees from the two sides have reached understandings in several fields, including the economy, finance, customs, transportation, energy and agriculture.
