Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh told Iraqi President Barham Salih that he looked forward to implementing the memorandums of understanding and agreements between the two countries in order to strengthen the Palestinian Authority’s ability to implement the disengagement plan from Israel. “We want to implement the agreements, especially in the fields of agriculture, industry and trade, in line with the government’s strategy and its decision to gradually disengage from the occupation,” he said. Shtayyeh arrived in Iraq on Monday at the head of a senior delegation including ministers, businessmen and the director of General Intelligence, in an attempt to launch a new phase of economic cooperation. The Palestinian Authority plans to import oil from Iraq and refine it in Jordan. Iraq had earlier announced its readiness to provide Iraqi oil to the Palestinians. The PS currently imports fuel from Israel under economic agreements that it seeks to abolish in response to the Israeli government’s financial measures against the Palestinians. Salih, for his part, emphasized his country’s support for the Palestinian people to ensure a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Before his meeting with the president, Shtayyeh met with Palestinian and Iraqi investors in the presence of a number of concerned ministers from the two countries at his residence in the Iraqi capital Baghdad. The premier said he was working to open the doors of investment between the two countries, adding: “Despite the irregular conditions that we live in because of the occupation, our people have made great achievements in the economy and we have many success stories that we are proud of.” He also presented the government’s strategy for the gradual disengagement from Israel and the achievement of development through the promotion of national products and investment in human capabilities.
