Omans Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi held separate discussions with high-ranks Iranian officials in Tehran on navigation safety and threats facing Hormuz Strait. The talks didn’t lead to tangible outcomes regarding the seized British tanker amid accelerated US-European efforts to ensure navigation in the strait. Bin Alawi returned to Tehran, knowing that his last visit was in May to contain the Iranian-US tension following targeting two oil carriers in front of Fujairah. He discussed with Secretary of Irans Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani the tension in Hormuz Strait, after meeting his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif on Saturday. Following the meeting, Zarif wrote on his Twitter: "Very pleased to host my distinguished friend Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Oman’s FM, in Tehran today. Discussed effects of the US’ Economic Terrorism on Iran; bilateral relations, regional developments and security in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman." The Omani foreign minister, for his part, stressed the need for using past experiences to prevent the tensions in the region from escalating and avoiding actions that can result in instability and insecurity in the region. He also called for putting an end to applying military tools for settling political disputes. Bin Alawi added that all countries must uphold security regulations particularly in the Strait of Hormuz - he also called for refraining from doing actions that can create a crisis and extend it or actions that impose an unnecessary cost on the countrys trade and its trade with others. Shamkhani said that the security arrangements of the Middle East region must be shaped by the regional countries themselves, stressing that the foreign intervention will have no positive results but increasing problems of the region. He also referred to the seizure of a UK-flagged tanker by Iranian security forces, stressing that all countries need to uphold international maritime rules. Shamkhani added that Iran upholds the international maritime regulations equally in relation to all counties without any discrimination. The SNSC secretary further pointed out that Iran’s seizure of the UK oil tanker was completely legal and was done for maintaining maritime security.
