Lebanese President Michel Aoun is about to launch a plan to resolve imbalances in state institutions through the holding of a nation-wide dialogue. In parallel, the government is expected to finally convene this week, after a month of inactivity, as Prime Minister Saad Hariri is likely to call for a cabinet meeting on Tuesday at the latest. Strong Lebanon bloc MP Alain Aoun said that the president “will launch a plan in the coming hours to resolve the imbalance in the country by calling for a responsible national dialogue away from bickering, in order to avoid the recurrence of disputes, similar to those over Article 80” of the state budget. The said article calls for the employment of applicants for state positions, who have passed the Civil Service Board exams but were not yet hired due to political disputes over sectarian imbalance between Christian and Muslim applicants. The Strong Lebanon bloc – headed by Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil – called for the removal of the article as “it leads to a breach of balances, agreements, and understandings.” In parallel, the government is moving to resume its meetings, as confirmed by sources close to Hariri. LBC television channel quoted the sources as saying that the current talk about the resignation of Prime Minister Hariri “as a result of the accumulation of crises” were baseless. Cabinet meetings were suspended in July as a result of internal political disputes, mainly an incident in the Chouf region, which left two persons killed. The sources told LBC that the government is expected to begin addressing the economic file amid ministerial promises that the country’s economic crisis would soon end. In this regard, Defense Minister Elias Bou Saab, said on Sunday: “Today, we are at the gates of a new stage despite all the difficulties and circumstances we are going through,” adding that a new phase will begin, “based on dialogue and understanding.”
