The window for candidates to submit their candidacies in Tunisia’s October 6 legislative elections closed on Monday. The Independent High Authority for Elections started receiving nominations from 220 parties on July 22. It received electoral lists in more than 30 electoral districts. The authority is expected to announce the approved lists on August 6. Observers are looking forward to the results parties will reap in the polls, such as the Heart of Tunisia, led by Nabil Karoui, and the Destourian Movement that represents the former regime that was ousted by popular protests in 2011. Heart of Tunisia topped voter surveys, while the Destourian Movement came third after the Ennahda Movement, one of the traditional parties in the country. The Tahya Tounes party, which leads the current coalition government, came in fourth. The parliament ratified on June 18 amendments to the electoral law, imposing new restrictions on nominations. President Beji Caid Essebsi refused to sign them, saying they were aimed at eliminating the eligibility of certain political powers. Essebsi passed away on Thursday.
