The General Secretariat of the Arab League (AL) launched Monday a training course on “developing the competencies of adult refugees and displaced trainers in stable places in the Arab countries” at the UNESCO Regional Center (ASFEC), in Monufia governorate. Co-organized by the Arab States Fundamental Education Center (ASFEC) and the Arab Scout Region, the course was attended by delegations of volunteer scout leaders from the refugee and shelter zones across the Arab world. The course aims at enabling trainers to help their fellow volunteers in the targeted areas in order to uproot illiteracy among refugees and to contribute to the elimination of this phenomenon that threatens progress and growth in the Arab world. In a statement late Sunday, the AL stressed that this course comes in line with its leading role in granting refugees access to education during crises, adding that it “targets refugees and displaced persons in Arab countries.” It is also an implementation of the resolution issued by the AL council during its 26th session that was held in March in Sharm El Sheikh and called for the endorsement of the Arab charter on literacy and adult education (2015-2024) to eradicate illiteracy in all its forms throughout the Arab world. In addition, the course follows the recommendations of the Higher Coordination Committee of the Arab Decade for Literacy, which focused on the displaced issues and their inability to access schools in light of wars and armed conflicts, stating that this problem is one of the major reasons behind the increase in the number of illiterate people in the Arab world.
