Gazas health authorities said Friday that a Palestinian man was killed by Israeli gunfire during the weekly protest along the fortified Gaza-Israel frontier. Alaa Hamdan, 28, died of his wounds at a hospital, the Gaza health ministry said. Local media reports said he was hit in the chest by a live bullet. Several thousand Palestinians participated in protests along the perimeter fence. A spokeswoman for the Israeli military told Reuters that some 7,000 Palestinians took part in the protests. The weekly demonstrations, dubbed the “Great March of Return,” were launched last year to protest the Israeli blockade on Gaza and for Palestinians to have the right to return to land from which their families fled or were forced to flee during Israels 1948 founding. Most of the more than 200 Palestinian fatalities — and an Israeli soldier — were killed in the first year of the campaign, before the protests were scaled down under an official truce to improve Gaza living conditions.
