Britons can register online to ensure they are able to vote Proxy nominations will remain open until Dec. 4 DUBAI: British citizens have just a few hours left to register to vote if they want to take part in the December 12 general election. Forms need to be completed and returned by 23:59 GMT on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019. And it is not too late, even if you live abroad as voter registration can be done online at the UK Government’s website. People who won’t be in their constituency on Dec. 12, can still cast their vote, either by registering for a postal vote – which is reliant on the postal systems both in Britain and people’s host countries - or by nominating someone they trust as a proxy voter. Once registered, people have until Dec. 4 to nominate a proxy voter, who can then vote on that person’s behalf. Meanwhile social media is filled with various campaigns urging Britons to register before the deadline. Under British law general elections usually happen every five years. But the Dec. 12 vote will be the fourth since David Cameron was elected in 2010, after a succession of resignations, and Parliamentary votes for an early return to the ballot box. Parliament agreed to hold the Dec. 12 general election after Boris Johnson failed to receive the backing needed to reach a deal on Brexit to secure Britain’s exit from the EU. The Liberal Democrats are campaigning on a pledge to reverse Brexit, while Labour has said it will offer the British public a second referendum with an option to remain in the EU - the Conservatives have said they will ensure that Brexit happens. All the main parties are also claiming they will be able to fix the country’s economy – and each claims it will be the best party to manage the country’s National Health Service (NHS).
