Iran said on Sunday it would further roll back its commitments to the 2015 nuclear deal after a US airstrike killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad. State television cited a government statement as saying Iran would not respect any limits set down in the pact with six major powers on the number of uranium enrichment centrifuges it could use, which meant there would be no limits on its enrichment capacity, the level to which uranium could be enriched, or Irans nuclear research and development. These would from now on be based on Irans technical needs. The statement said Irans steps could be reversed if Washington lifted its sanctions on Tehran. It added that Tehran will continue to cooperate with the UN nuclear watchdog. The announcement came Sunday night after an Iranian official said it would consider taking even-harsher steps over the US killing of Soleimani on Friday. Although its unclear how or when Iran may respond, any retaliation was likely to come after three days of mourning declared in both Iran and Iraq. Mohsen Rezaei, a former leader of the Revolutionary Guards, told a crowd of mourners in Tehran that the Israeli city of Haifa and other “centers” like Tel Aviv could be targeted. Rezaei earlier alleged without offering evidence that Israel leaked information to the US about Soleimanis whereabouts, which allowed them to carry out the drone strike. “Rest assured we will level to the ground Haifa and Israeli centers so that Israel will be wiped out,” he said. “The issue is very serious for the Iranian nation. You hit us and you should get hit. You attacked us and it is the Iranian nations right.”
