Saudi Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Jaber revealed on Thursday that representatives from the legitimate Yemeni government and the Southern Transitional Council (STC) discussed the implementation of phase two of the Riyadh Agreement. In a tweet posted on his account, Al-Jaber wrote, “Phase 2 of (the) Riyadh Agreement includes collecting all medium and heavy weapons from all military and security forces in Aden within 15 days of signing the agreement and transporting them to camps inside Aden, selected and supervised by the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen.” The deal stipulates that both sides withdraw forces from Aden within three weeks, as part of the latest phase of the Riyadh Agreement. It also requires that the Yemeni President appoints a governor and a security chief for the Governorate of Aden, based on standards of competence and integrity, and after consultations, within 15 days of signing the agreement. “This phase is an integral part of completing the previous steps of the Agreement to achieve security, stability, peace and development. I commend the efforts of HE President (Abdrabbuh Mansur) Hadi and the teams of his government and STC for their effective response to implement the pact,” Al Jaber said. Earlier, Ahmed Obaid bin Dagher, an adviser to Hadi, explained that a deadline of 20 days, beginning from Jan. 11, has been set to implement troop withdrawals on both sides. The Riyadh Agreement was signed on Nov. 5 between Yemen’s internationally recognized government and the STC under the auspices of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
