Turkey sent on Wednesday reinforcements to its military units near its borders with Syria, including armored carriers for soldiers and special forces to units stationed on the southern border. It also called on Russia to abide by its commitments on a ceasefire in Idlib, being the guarantor state for Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu noted that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted this point during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of Berlin International Conference on Libya. He said the situation is still critical in Idlib, adding that the regime has been increasing its aggression and indiscriminately killing civilians in the region. Cavusoglu’s statements were delivered during a session on Geopolitical Outlook: the Middle East and Africa, which was held at Davos in Switzerland. He pointed out that Turkey does not agree with Russia on everything such as Moscow’s support for the Assad regime or the illegal annexation of Crimea. Despite differences, however, Cavusoglu stressed that both countries are working together to resolve the crises in Syria and Libya and also to prevent a humanitarian crisis in Idlib. In this context, Turkey started building temporary houses as an alternative to the camps to accommodate the displaced from Idlib. It seeks to shelter 10,000 families in temporary homes during the first phase of the project, which is implemented by donations. Houses are being built with an area of 24 meters each, five kilometers from the Turkish border in Idlib’s rural areas. More than 70,000 civilians were forced to flee the area during the ongoing escalation a week ago, media reported.
