Parties backing the government of Prime Minister Hassan Diab, mainly Hezbollah and the Amal Movement, called on Sunday deputies and political parties to grant the new PM a chance to resolve Lebanon’s economic and financial crisis. On Monday, the ministerial committee tasked with drafting the government’s policy statement is expected to hold its last meeting before submitting the final text to the cabinet for approval. Hezbollah MP Ali Fayyad called on all political forces to help the government accomplish its task of saving Lebanon from collapse. “During this phase, we need to practice positive politics. This is not a time for settling scores,” he said, citing the “immense national mission” to tackle the economic and financial crisis. Lebanon can only overcome this crisis if the people give the government the support it needs, he remarked. The same stance was echoed Sunday by Amal MP Hani Qobeissi, who said that the “coming days would be good for our people and nation after the government is given the vote of confidence.” The government’s first priority is to resolve the economic and financial problems caused by banks, the Central Bank and some exchange firms that are sowing doubts among the people, he stressed. Hezbollah deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem called for giving the new government a chance to prove itself, highlighting the importance of political stability in Lebanon. Meanwhile, MP Shamel Roukoz, President Michel Aoun’s son-in-law, criticized the economic and financial strategy implemented by the state and banks in recent years. “Banks offered high interest rates to encourage the people to deposit their money. This money was in turn, loaned to the state, which qualified as robbery,” he said. The new government must win a vote of confidence from parliament, amid a liquidity crunch that has fueled inflation, a weakening Lebanese pound and battered confidence in banks that have imposed tight controls.
