Saudi Customs has announced the introduction of international road transport operations in the Kingdom to allow goods to travel with limited customs interference. The Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) system was introduced by Saudi authorities to activate the accession of the Kingdom to the UN’s TIR Convention, the only global customs transit system. “The start of TIR operations in the Kingdom represents an important step for Saudi Customs toward the harmonization and facilitation of customs transit procedures between TIR contracting parties,” said Majid Al-Mirzam, vice governor of trade facilitation and operations at Saudi Customs. Al-Mirzam has been working in this position since September 2019. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in information systems in 2000 at King Saud University. Following his graduation, Al-Mirzam joined Saudi Telecom Co. as a department manager. Throughout his career, he worked with top companies and institutions in the public and private sectors including Alinma Bank, Microsoft and MDS Saudi Arabia. From April 2012 to July 2016, Al-Mirzam served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an adviser. He also worked as the assistant deputy minister for foreign trade relations at the Ministry of Commerce and Investment from August 2016 to January 2017. Al-Mirzam was a board member of the National Center for Palms and Dates. He was a member of the steering committee at the General Authority for Zakat and Tax between December 2016 and August 2018. Currently, he is a board member of ASICOM Algerian-Saudi Investment Co. He is also a graduate of the Program for Leadership Development offered by the Harvard Business School Executive Education. Al-Mirzam joined Saudi Customs in January 2017 and since then he has been part of the transformation of his department in line with the Vision 2030.
