Joe Biden retreated from New Hampshire while voting was still under way yesterday before another poor result, with Bernie Sanders on course to claim victory in the state’s primary contest. Early results put Mr Biden in a humiliating fifth place, with Mr Sanders comfortably in the lead and a close battle for second between Pete Buttigieg, a former city mayor, and Amy Klobouchar, a senator from Minnesota. The former vice-president failed to show up for his own results party, heading instead to South Carolina, the fourth state to hold a vote at the end of the month.
