e are seeing the side effects of Warren Gatland’s Wales tenure: a ten-point defeat by Ireland in Dublin is viewed in some quarters as an apocalyptically poor result, such is the heightened expectation of success among fans. And yet even under Gatland, there were plenty of more chastening defeats against the men in green: conceding five tries to lose 37-27 two years ago; a 26-3 hammering in 2014; tryless in the 27-12 reverse of 2010. This was only Wayne Pivac’s second Six Nations match in charge, a new style of play being learnt in double-quick time.
