Anyone wanting a heady shot of New York’s spirit can repair to the old wood-slatted walkway of the Brooklyn Bridge, crammed with strolling lovers, milling tourists, impatient commuters and deeply frustrated cyclists. Within a few minutes a visitor can hope to be yelled at by an angry New Yorker and to hear: “I’m walking here.” Now, after many complaints, the city is attempting to fix the landmark. Corey Johnson, the city council speaker, announced a public contest yesterday “to rethink the iconic Brooklyn Bridge walkway, making it more welcoming for tourists while remaining pleasant for [New Yorkers]”.
