The contest to find a moderate Democrat able to defeat first Bernie Sanders and then President Trump became more muddled yesterday after a split vote allowed the veteran leftwinger to become the party’s new frontrunner. Mr Sanders, 78, topped the vote in New Hampshire as expected but with the lowest winning total in primary history, while a surge by Amy Klobuchar, a moderate Minnesota senator, prevented Pete Buttigieg, 38, the former city mayor, claiming top spot. Ms Klobuchar, 59, finished a strong third with her pledge to unite America as well as the Democratic Party, taking votes not only from Mr Buttigieg but also from Joe Biden, 77, the former vice-president, who finished a disastrous fifth in the Granite State.
