A father and son have been arrested for allegedly plundering thousands of artefacts dating as far back as the Bronze Age from a lake near their Alpine home. Police said the two men had created what they called “a private museum” at their house in the vicinity of Lake Aiguebelette, about 60 miles east of Lyons, with the knives, axes, arrows, statues and other items they had found. The lake is among 111 prehistoric settlements in the Alps that have been classified as World Heritage sites by Unesco. The sites date from 5000BC to 500BC, and were occupied by people living in stilt houses by lakes, rivers and wetlands.
