Hundreds of staff at French ski resorts went on strike this weekend in protest against Emmanuel Macron’s labour reforms, forcing some runs to close in the Alps and the Pyrenees. Workers held protests at about 40 resorts, with up to two-thirds of staff stopping work at some. Thousands of seasonal workers are concerned that reforms lengthening the required period of employment before they become eligible for benefits could deprive them of financial support out of season. Christophe Dupuis, a ski patroller at La Plagne, one of the world’s most popular resorts, said: “We will have to work for six months instead of four before we can apply for unemployment benefit.” Unions argue that the ski season never lasts six months and is getting shorter each year because of climate change.
