Saracens" unbeaten season continued with a comprehensive 42-7 win over a struggling Richmond side on Saturday. A fixture that was originally postponed due to an unplayable pitch instead took place with Storm Dennis rumbling overhead. Saracens knew that a win would take them back to the summit of the Tyrrells Premier 15s and they duly obliged. However, it was the home side Richmond that started brightest, getting the opening score of the game via Ro Burnfield who crashed over from short range. Richmond have only registered one win all season, but their bright start sparked brief hopes of a major upset with the extreme weather conditions always likely to tighten up the game. The reigning champions did not take long too long to respond with Jodie Rettie drawing them level after a dominant scrum, dotting down over the line. The next phase of the game was dominated by the weather with slippery conditions making ball-handling extremely difficult. Saracens made the breakthrough as Rocky Clark ran a powerful hard line off Lisa Martin to go under the sticks, giving them a 14-7 lead at half-time. After the break the quality of Saracens shone through as their England stars, fresh off the back of two weeks of Six Nations action, took control. Alex Ellis, Hannah Botterman, Vicky Fleetwood and Poppy Cleall all crossed the try-line in a dominant second-half showing. With the try bonus-point wrapped up by the 52nd minute, Saracens’ power runners cut loose, making life extremely difficult for the Richmond defence. England prop Hannah Botterman delivered a standout performance in conditions where only forwards could really shine. The win took Saracens two points clear of fellow title contenders Harlequins while Richmond remain only one point off bottom. Two starkly contrasting seasons continued on their respective trajectories, uninterrupted despite the best efforts of Storm Dennis to blow them off course.
