Last spring, as a final touch to my new wildlife garden, I had six nest boxes installed into the cavity walls of my house. These clever inventions are a great way to make a house permanently more wildlife friendly and are easy to install – particularly in new build homes (birdbrickhouses.co.uk). As my house is Victorian, I had the boxes retro-fitted by a bricklayer. He carefully removed a few outer bricks and then fitted the box, which was covered with “slices” of matching brick to blend in with the house as much as possible. The surrounding area was repointed and...voila! Six new nest boxes. They look fantastic, just like six holes in my wall – you can’t tell there are boxes behind them at all....
