9:56pm Full time: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 That"s the lot. Chelsea can count themselves very unlucky, VAR has tucked them up at least twice there. Harry Maguire should have been sent off. VAR then ruled out a Chelsea goal for pushing, but United were also pushing in that moment. Then VAR denied Giroud a lovely header for a marginal offside. 9:55pm 90+5 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 One final attack, Willian still dangerous, everywhere, creating and running... but that"s the lot. 9:54pm 90+3 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 Ighalo!!! Oh so close. Fred sent him through, the newbie stabbed a shot at the goal and Wily Caballero managed to block it. Would have been a thrilling start to his United career. 9:51pm 90+1 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 Fernandes, who had a nice busy game and delivered some quality from the dead ball, comes off and Dalot comes on. 9:50pm 90 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 Dayboo! Ighalo is coming on for his first minute, and it fact it will be approx five minutes, of action in a United shirt. Martial the man to make way. 9:49pm 88 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 Chelsea now have a freekick after a high foot from, was it, Fernandes? It"s whipped in and it hits the post. James with the fakeout and then Mount whips an excellent low freekick that hits the post. De Gea was beaten and himself also hits the post. Seems to have hurt his shoulder. Not sure if he is making the most of it to run the clock down or not. Oh Chelsea! Has Lampard run over a black cat or something? 9:47pm 87 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 I think Chelsea must surely feel it is not their day but, credit where it is due, they are throwing their all at United. A busy goalmouth scramble leads to a Chelsea corner. 80 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 Andreas Pereira on for Daniel James. 79 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 Another set-to, this time between Wan-Bissaka and Azpilicueta, they get in each others face and are sort of forehead-to-forehead. Only the United man is booked. Why? 9:37pm Chelsea have it in the net thanks to a brilliant header from Giroud after a brilliant cross. But VAR has disallowed it because Giroud"s foot is offside by a couple of inches. 1) Game"s gone. 2) Pretty funny if you don"t like Chelsea. That is just pathetic really. Oh well. Gary Neville thinks it"s offside and cannot see what all the fuss is about. 9:36pm 76 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 Williams hacks down Willian and becomes our sixth booking of the evening. 9:35pm 74 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 United have plenty of problem areas but E Bailly is not one. Some quality defending from him again here as he gets in the way of Kovacic"s shot, the opportunity for which was provided by Giroud. 9:29pm 69 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 Gosh it"s damn nearly three. Excellent dead ball in from United"s Fernandes again, the Villain Maguire heads back across, and Azpi has to head clear from practically under his own bar. 9:29pm 68 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 2 Olivier Giroud is on, he"s scored 20 times from the bench; only Jermaine Defoe has been a more effective sub in PL history. Batshuayi the man who makes way, and he can have no complaints. Other than having Harry Maguire kick him in the nuts, that is. GOAL! Chelsea 0 Man United 2 (Maguire 66) It"s Harry Maguire! From a corner! Oh, Chelsea. How do you like that? Maguire should have been off in the first half, Chelsea had a goal from a corner probably wrongly chalked off, and now Maguire has brought those two themes together by rising above all rivals at the corner to nut it home. Cruel! Fernandes the man who delivered an excellent dead ball. Rudiger the man who lost Maguire. 9:24pm 64 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 1 Fred and Fernandes hover around the ball... it"s Fernandes who strikes it! Whips it against the post! 9:23pm 63 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 1 Pedro loses the plot, and then loses the ball to Fred, and then barges him to the floor in a flap. This gives United a freekick on the edge of the Chelsea box. 9:18pm 58 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 1 Some argy bargy between the players. Martial lying on the floor after Zouma"s wild sliding tackle on him. That sparked a bit of multiple actor handbags that ended with Fred in the book. Oh, and Zouma too for the original foul. 9:15pm Chelsea have it in the net Zouma heads it in from the corner. But VAR seeks to ruin the entertainment yet again... and yep, there you go. Azpilicueta is adjudged to have pushed Williams in the build up. He did indeed push Williams, but arguably Fred had pushed Azpilicueta, whose momentum thus carried him into the United player. Goal is chalked off. What a pathetic system. 54mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 1 Surely! Perdo runs at the defence, gets a shot in but it"s blocked. He tries again. Scrambled behind. Corner. 9:07pm 46 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 1 Rudiger bodychecks an opponent for a pointless booking on Fernandes Kurt Zouma is on for Andreas Christensen, presumably that whack to the nose is a factor. Can"t see Captain Leader Legend JT going off for a mere busted hooter, can you? 9:02pm Paul Pogba agent has had a good pop at Solskjaer. Mino Raiola rails against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Manchester United manager comments on Paul Pogba’s future 8:58pm Looking at that Maguire one again, from the other angle, there is no doubt whatsoever that he"s bent and then extended his leg to boot Batshuayi in the unmentionables. Very poor. Half time: Chelsea 0 Man United 1 Both teams have put together some pretty play, but neither has looked incisive or ruthless. One shot (Marital"s header) on target and that is the difference at half time. 8:50pm 45+ mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 1 It"s Batshu again. Oh dear. A third chance goes begging. He"s slipped through superbly by Pedro, who opens United up with a surgeon"s touch, and Batshuayi has surged clear in the inside right channel. He never really looks like scoring to be honest and sure enough, he"s hit that wide. Poor lad. Not his night. 8:46pm GOAL! Chelsea 0 Man United 1 (Marital 45) Wan-Bissaka with excellent work down the right, he crosses the ball and Anthony Marital has got in front of Christensen to glance a super header home. Only Christensen can say how much the nose bleed/treatment was playing on his mind or his performance, but Martial - not well known as an aerial threat - has had him on toast there. 44 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Bit of repair work needed on Christensen, who has had a whack in the nose there and is leaking some claret. 8:43pm 42 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Christensen and Martial tangle and, again, it looked to me - maybe? - that the Chelsea player slightly left his boot in there as they fell, very hard to say for sure but it feels like there"s something in the air at this game. Not just taxi drivers yelling. Is it still like that at Stamford Bridge these days? I have no idea. But anyway: game feels like it has a bit of sly needle in it. 8:39pm 39 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Willian down under pressure from Shaw, all looked pretty innocuous to me, but the Brazil player is making a meal of it. Perhaps he thinks the ref thinks he owes him one. 8:39pm 38 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Oh look, it"s Antony Martial. Good evening Antony. Hadn"t seen you there. A nice one-two with Fernandes, a swift charge up the inside left channel and a shot across goal that leaves the goalie floundering. 8:37pm 36 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Willian is booked for diving! He jinked past Fernandes, who stuck out a leg and Willian went down on the edge of the box. Ref looked pretty sure of himself. Lampard"s livid! Lividpard. I can understand why. 8:35pm 35 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Dithering! Matic is flapping around in the area and fails to clear. Bailly saves the day. 8:35pm 34 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Two sporting institutions that must be worth literally billions and between them they cannot get a centre forrward on the pitch? 8:33pm 32 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Chels have a corner of their own but that also comes to naff all. 8:33pm 31 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Well, I should say, the corner was dealt with in as much as it fell to Bruno Fernandes, who shot a mile wide. 8:32pm 30 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 That is Chelsea"s problem! They lose it in midfield, although to be fair another ref might have given a foul there, and United break at pace with Williams down the left. James is a-lurking but Kovacic hacks behind. The corner is dealt with. 8:27pm 25 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 The Bat man should have scored that! Mount down the left, he"s picked out Michy Batshuayi, who has all the time in the world to apply a sidefoot finish, but has stroked it disappointingly wide. That was a bad miss. 8:24pm 24 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Another good move from Chelsea, this is an enterprising performance from the hosts. Multiple players involved with a cross, flick on, it drops to Willian who rifles it across but alas Michy B cannot get his feet around it. 8:23pm 21 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Harry Maguire has kicked Michy Batshuayi in the penis. Harry fell, and his boot went up towards the opponent"s groin. Looked very much to me that he then lifted the other boot to give him a bit of a sly kick. VAR VAR VAR says no pen though. 18 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Chelsea have some amazing players, you know? Even with the loss of Hazard. Willian would get into any side in the world, and here he is switching flanks to rip United open down the left now, the cross though is repelled. 8:16pm 15 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Clever, brisk bit of play sends Batshuayi into the area but, alas, the Belgian loses his footing. 8:15pm 13 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Mount comes on but the momentum is all with United. Lampard has to think on his feet. Useful cross from Daniel James. 8:14pm 12 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Chelsea haven"t got their sub on yet, I guess not warmed up? Seems a bit sloppy. Mason Mount eventually gets a run, but not before United have fashioned a useful opportunity with Fernandes and Fred (or, "the much maligned Fred" to give him his correct title) playing a nice one-two. 8:11pm 10 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Oh, that is a sorry sight. N"Golo Kante is limping off. 8:10pm 9 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Similar sort of position as Willian now picks it up and cuts inside in that familiar way of his, so quicksilver and surefooted, and he"s hit another excellent shot... this a tiny bit wider and I think David DG had the measure of it, flying as it does wide of his RH upright. Mateo Kovacic was instrumental in setting up both of those moments. 8:06pm 5 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Here come Chelsea down the right, their brilliant Willian involved, and now play comes out to the left for them as Azpilicueta joins the attack .The play switched again - this is nice football from Chelsea and it is young James who surges onto it and hits a more than decent hard low shot.... a foot or so wide! Not sure De Gea was getting to that one. 8:04pm 3 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Neither side able to land a blow yet, circling each other like two... middleweight? Commonwealth level? boxers. Good atmos. 8:02pm 1 mins: Chelsea 0 Man United 0 Here come United down the left, a ball hit forward for the forwards to chase but Chelsea have their stall set out on this occasion at least. Chelsea: Caballero, James, Christensen, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Batshuayi, Willian. Subs: Arrizabalaga, Alonso, Barkley, Zouma, Giroud, Mount, Tomori. Man Utd: de Gea, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw, Wan Bissaka, Fred, Matic, Williams, Bruno Fernandes, James, Martial. Subs: Jones, Mata, Andreas Pereira, Dalot, Romero, Ighalo, Greenwood. Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire) 7:58pm The players are out on the pitch Big game for both sides. 7:51pm Frank Lampard "Crunch time! Tammy has the same injury, which is frustrating. Callum pulled up in training with a hamstring, but hopefully that isn"t too serious." "Gone with Wily, who has been a fantastic trainer and very professional and he comes in. "We know that United play on the counter and set up that way. It is up to our midfield to contain and control possession." Excellent analysis from Carra About Chelsea"s defensive failings, which he says may be "because Frank needs defenders" but maybe "is also him and his coaching staff". Here they are letting one in just after half time against West Ham. Look at that man at the bottom of the screen on halfway - he"s got the run on his fullback. Chelsea have the second worst concession rate against counter attacks - five let in. And they have only had five clean sheets. 7:28pm Ole there inspiring as a fishpaste sandwich in his pre-match interview. Still, he has a decent record vs these opponents. 7:13pm Gary Neville "I disagree with the idea that owners cannot not invest their money. As an owner, I have been clear about my views. My hometown club, Bury, went bust last year." "If people cannot invest because of FFP then you cannot have other clubs emerging. There have been some horror stories." "I have no faith in UEFA, hopeless organisation and I think they are applying the rules erratically and I think City will win in the courts." 7:11pm Good content on MNF as Roy Keane says that Man City players should stay, and the club "should take their medicine." Carra: "If a Man City player lifts that European Cup this May, will people say it is tainted? UEFA should have taken them out the competition right now, or waited." Chelsea selection Batshuayi as I mentioned, Willian and Mateo Kovacic start. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham are the players who miss out. 7:06pm United team Odion Ighalo is a sub for Manchester United, Eric Bailly is into the XI, as is Nemenja Matic and Brandon Williams. Mata, Pereira and Lindelof are the guys who make way. 7:04pm Roy Keane says that this is a must-win for United. Jamie Carragher is not so sure and reckons it is a must-not-lose. 7:02pm Teams for Chelsea vs Man United Chelsea: Caballero, James, Christensen, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Batshuayi, Willian. Subs: Arrizabalaga, Alonso, Barkley, Zouma, Giroud, Mount, Tomori. Man Utd: de Gea, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw, Wan Bissaka, Fred, Matic, Williams, Bruno Fernandes, James, Martial. Subs: Jones, Mata, Andreas Pereira, Dalot, Romero, Ighalo, Greenwood. Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire) 6:33pm Good evening! Tyers here, an intriguing match in the offing, and Monday Night Football as well to enjoy. We"ll have the team news for Chelsea vs Manchester United at about 7pm I should think, ahead of this match kicking off at Stamford Bridge at 8pm. It"s a clear night in London, a bit of a breeze, cool but not chilly for the time of year. Lots of subplots to enjoy with this fixture, as there always must be in the great Premier League soap opera. As always with these big games, my first port of call is the tactical wisdom of the young master, JJ Bull, who has dissected all that might happen in the fixture, focusing on that splendid Mr N"Golo Kante. Lampard has developed a system in which a 4-2-3-1 becomes a 2-2-6 shape in attacking phases, composed of four forwards and two advanced full-backs so far up the pitch they are effectively wingers. If the ball is on the left, the overlapping left-back, striker, attacking midfielder and left winger outnumber the opposition full-back and right-sided centre-back in a three vs two, or four vs three situation. What Chelsea and Manchester United must be wary of and why N"Golo Kante is key N"Golo Kante is brilliant in these transitional phases. Although perceived as a defensive midfielder, over the last two seasons he has been anything but, deployed as a box-to-box runner by Maurizio Sarri and now Lampard, as likely to turn up in the opposition box as he is break up play in his own half. If Chelsea can lure United into an attacking shape high up the pitch they can utilise Kante"s running to punish any space left vacant on the counter, with the goalkeeper encouraged to distribute quickly when in possession Frank Lampard studying Premier League table "two or three times a day" it sez ere. Well, he did get 11 GCSEs or something didn"t he? Ah, it"s not some sort of Beautiful Mind caper, it"s because he wants to use it as a motivational tool. Talking of motivational tools, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could do with lighting a fire under some of his, could he not? But there is much talk of the departure of Pogba, P in the summer, that agent chap of his is doing his thing again. Much to discuss, much to play for. Which of these two teams do you fancy has the better chance of mounting a Title challenge next season, say? Who needs to do what?
