Riyadh Statement Stresses Need to Unite Humanitarian Efforts to Reach Beneficiaries

The Riyadh Statement issued at the conclusion of the second Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum stressed the importance of establishing effective communication channels among organizations, bodies and societies involved in humanitarian work to reach beneficiaries. The statement included four main recommendations. The first was to enhance linking both humanitarian and development work through the full implementation of the commitments of the United Nations General Assembly resolution on the restoration of the UN development system. It also called for bolstering humanitarian and development cooperation to achieve greater coherence and efficiency in humanitarian work during crises. The second recommendation highlighted the importance of promoting health in the humanitarian context by focusing on infectious diseases and using the sustainable development goals as a tool to support an integrated approach to develop a sustainable framework to eliminate them. It urged concerned parties to exchange important information derived from early warning systems to ensure early interventions. In its third recommendation, the Riyadh statement pointed to the importance of examining the drivers behind mass migrations overseas from Africa to the Gulf states and Europe in humanitarian cases through a more comprehensive understanding of the issue. It its final recommended, the statement highlighted that increased investment and multisectoral support for young children and caretakers in crisis and displacement cases have an immediate and lasting impact on protecting childrens rights and establishing peaceful and stable societies in the future. It stressed the need to invest in early childhood to achieve the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
