The world was saddened and shocked by the tragic attacks on two mosques in Christchurch on March 15, 2019, especially since it happened in New Zealand, a country known for peace, security and tolerance. It was wonderful to see Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s sympathy, solidarity and firmness in the aftermath of the attacks. The New Zealand government’s response was decisive and rapid in supporting the families of the victims and criminalizing hate speech. These measures were a clear demonstration to the world that the New Zealand government and people will do whatever is necessary to preserve the unity of their nation, regardless of religion, sect or creed. The attack was an extension and translation of a culture of hatred, racism and extremism. Countries around the world stood in solidarity with New Zealand, condemning the attack and joining in the mourning ceremonies afterwards. Saudi Arabia condemns in the strongest terms these terrorist attacks and continues to stand with New Zealand and the world against the scourge of terrorism Abdulrahman Al-Suhaibani On hearing news of the attack, King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent their condolences and support to New Zealand’s governor-general and to the country’s people. King Salman also commented on Twitter: “The heinous massacre that targeted worshippers in New Zealand is a terrorist act, and it reaffirms the responsibility of the international community in combating hate speech and terrorism that is not condoned by religions or the values of tolerance.” Saudi Arabia condemns in the strongest terms these terrorist attacks and continues to stand with New Zealand and the world against the scourge of terrorism in all its forms, regardless of its source or purposes, since it is one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. The Kingdom also affirms that terrorism is a global crime that does not differentiate between religions, cultures and races and their danger to the whole world. As the Governor-General Patsy Reddy said: “If the purpose of the Christchurch attack was to sow hatred, then it failed. Instead, it brought us closer to each other — and in this society, we found renewed power.” In a humanitarian gesture, King Salman hosted 200 people from the families of the victims to perform Hajj last year in order to help them overcome the crisis. Furthermore, this year, King Salman will host those who were unable to perform Hajj last year because of their injuries. Saudi Arabia wish for New Zealand is that it will remain a safe and peaceful country that welcomes all.
