LONDON — British government is set to introduce pass an emergency legislation next week, banning mass gatherings in an attempt to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the country. Facing scathing criticism over his lackadaisical approach to the deadly virus, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is preparing to review his present course of action. The legislation could see the cancellation of events such as the Wimbledon tennis tournament and the Glastonbury music festival, due to begin at the end of June, as well as major horse races including Royal Ascot and Grand National. “We have drafted emergency legislation to give the government the powers it needs to deal with coronavirus, including powers to stop mass gatherings and compensate organizations,” Reuters reported quoting a government source. “We will publish this legislation next week.” Earlier But on Friday, England’s soccer Premier League suspended all matches until April 4 and other events such as the London Marathon were postponed by their organizers. Meanwhile, British royals have canceled or postponed their scheduled visits and engagements next week as a precautionary measure. Queen Elizabeth II has postponed a number of engagements, according to Buckingham Palace. Her eldest son, Prince Charles, has postponed a trip to Bosnia, Cyprus and Jordan, scheduled to begin next week. Britain has 798 cases of Covid-19 disease linked to the new coronavirus, including 10 deaths, according to latest figures. But a senior health official estimated that the number of infected people is more likely to be between 5,000 and 10,000. — Agencies
