Egypt, Jordan Shut Schools, Universities as Virus-hit Cases Increase

Egypt said it would shut down all schools and universities to fight the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus. The closures of schools and universities would start on Sunday and continue for two weeks. Egyptian presidential spokesman Bassam Radi said that upon the directives of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi up to 100 billion Egyptian pounds ($6.38bn) were allocated to finance the states "comprehensive plan" for tackling the disease. This came after the countrys health ministry registered 13 new cases on Friday, raising the total number of cases in Egypt to 93. The Ministry of Health said one patient has recovered and was no longer quarantined after he received the proper medical care according to the WHO recommendations. This has raised the total of those who recovered from the virus to 21 until Friday. For his part, Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister of Egypt, announced in a press conference that he had issued instructions to cancel all sports activities in all facilities throughout the country. Meanwhile, the Jordanian government took several precautionary measures to counter the new coronavirus, including the suspension of flights to and from the Kingdom, the disruption of the study and the closure of tourist sites. Prime Minister Omar Al-Razzaz announced the suspension of educational institutions (kindergartens, nurseries, schools, universities, colleges, institutions and training institutes) from Sunday morning, March 15, 2020, for two weeks. He stressed that it was decided to “suspend all flights to and from the Kingdom from Tuesday 17 March 2020, until further notice, except commercial freight.” The Jordanian government also called for halting all public events and gatherings, including mourning houses and weddings. Under the guidance of the Fatwa Council and the Council of Churches, it urged halting prayers in all mosques and churches of the Kingdom, with a commitment to raising the call to prayer on time, and broadcasting a unified Friday sermon via TV stations. Also, hospitals and prison visits are banned as of Sunday until further notice.
