Two Tunisian opposition parties, Heart of Tunisia and Dignity Coalition, presented two different proposals to the government to help overcome the repercussions of the Coronavirus. Observers considered the different proposals an indication of the disagreements between the opposition parties on their relationship with the ruling coalition. Head of the Islamist Dignity Coalition, Seifeddine Makhlouf, called for easing the curfew so that bakeries, vegetable dealers, markets, and transportation can buy their basic needs and supplied within reasonable time. The Coalition also called for banning gatherings of more than three people and limiting the number of passengers in various means of transportation. It also encouraged remote working and unifying all measures in all districts. For its part, Heart of Tunisia, chaired by Nabil Karoui, expressed its unconditional support for the government and called for enforcing a lockdown in the entire country as soon as possible, ensuring the full readiness to confront this pandemic. The party stressed the importance of being frank with the public on the conditions and availability of foodstuffs, medicines, gasoline, water, and electricity. It also called for supporting institutions and workers affected by these measures by issuing unemployment compensation and postponing the payment of debts. The party also emphasized the need to provide the necessary care for prisoners, and ensure prisons have needed protective supplies, whether for guards or prisoners. Meanwhile, Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) spokesman Sami al-Taheri called for the confiscation of the property of everyone proven to have monopolized goods, foodstuffs, and medicines during this period. The Union had issued a set of financial, social, and economic proposals to the government to overcome the repercussions of the health crisis that hit the local economy and hindered the work of most institutions. UGTT suggested that the government ask the banks to defer demanding debts payment without any additional fines, reducing the interest rate on bank loans, and exempting bank cardholders from all applied taxes. In addition, they called for facilitating the issuance of credit cards to minimize usage of bank notes, and called for compensating the wages of employees affected by the current situation. The government has responded to some of the suggestions of the Union through a package of measures announced by the Central Bank. UGTT Sec-Gen, Noureddine Taboubi, announced mid-March the Union was postponing all its protests and labor strikes, as well as conferences and public meetings, given the difficult circumstances the country is going through that require national solidarity and unity among all.
