Dozens of fighters from the Syrian factions loyal to Turkey in the Peace Spring and Olive Branch operations gathered Sunday near Al-Alam roundabout in Tel Abyad to demand their transfer to Turkish-controlled areas west of the Euphrates. The fighters also asked to be replaced by other fighters and that Turkish forces pay them their salaries. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighters opened fire in the air to express their discontent. On March 17, SOHR sources reported that widespread tension prevailed in areas controlled by Turkish forces and their proxies in Ras Al-Ain, in Al-Hasakah countryside and Tal Abyad in rural Raqqa. The sources said fighters from the “National Army” factions held protests demanding Turkey pays their wages, open the border and shift fighters. The fighters blocked the roads in Ras Al-Ain and Tal Abyad with tires. Turkey launched Operation Peace Spring in October to eliminate YPG/PKK fighters from its borders in northern Syria, where Ankara also carried out Operation Euphrates Shield in August 2016 and Operation Olive Branch in January 2018 for the same purpose. Separately, a pro-Turkey fighter was killed on Sunday by armed men in a camp northeast of Aleppo, which hosts Syrians who were moved from Homs to the Rai area. The fighter was killed after opening fire sporadically in the air inside the camp. On the battlefield, Turkish forces shelled Syrian regime positions in the strategic Regiment 46 Base in the western countryside of Aleppo province. There was no word on casualties. Syrian regime forces shelled areas in the countryside of Saraqeb in the east of Idlib and targeted positions in the countryside of west Aleppo, without causing any casualties. The attack is part of the ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement reached between Russia and Turkey early last month in Idlib, according to the Observatory.
