Bhasha Mukherjee was crowned Miss England in 2019 The beauty queen contacted the hospital she worked at to tell them she wanted to return back to work LONDON: A British junior doctor who holds the “Miss England” crown has returned to the UK from her overseas charity work so she can join the fight against coronavirus. Bhasha Mukherjee had been in India for four weeks to carry out aid work around the world in her capacity as Miss England. The 24-year-old beauty queen took a career break as a junior doctor after competing in the Miss World pageant in December 2019. She represented the UK at the pageant after winning Miss England. But since the coronavirus outbreak, Mukherjee has been stranded in India due to the lockdown. She appealed to the UK government to bring her back home in order to help combat the virus. Mukherjee said in an interview with CNN that she was receiving messages from former colleagues at her old hospital, the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, eastern England, telling her how difficult the situation is. In response, the beauty queen contacted the hospital’s management to tell them she wanted to return back to work. "I wanted to come back home. I wanted to come and go straight to work," she told the CNN. "I felt a sense of this is what I"d got this degree for and what better time to be part of this particular sector than now." "It was incredible the way the whole world was celebrating all key workers, and I wanted to be one of those, and I knew I could help," she said. Mukherjee returned to the UK last week after working with the British High Commission in Kolkata to find a flight to London. "There"s no better time for me to be Miss England and helping England at a time of need," she said. Mukherjee is currently in self-isolation for 14 days before she returns to work as a doctor.
