Sudan’s Prime Minister, Abdalla Hamdok, warned that the high number of recorded coronavirus cases in the country indicates the dangerous spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the country. During his visit to the “unified platform to confront COVID-19 pandemic” in Khartoum, Hamdok called for strict implementation of the directives issued by the Ministry of Health. He also urged citizens to comply with lockdown measures as that is the only way to fight the coronavirus. The PM pointed out that countries around the world with a large number of resources, compared to Sudan, are suffering from the coronavirus. Hamdok asserted that the preventive measures taken by the government with combined efforts will enable Sudan to overcome this crisis. The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Sudan jumped to 92, with 12 deaths so far, after the Ministry reported 26 new cases, including two deaths, in the capital. There are also 400 cases in isolation centers waiting for test results. The first case was reported in early April. Sudan’s epidemiological department indicated that the death toll exceeded 10 percent in the country, which is a high percentage compared to the number of cases and deaths in the Arab and African countries. The MoH warned that catastrophic conditions could lead to the collapse of the entire health sector, which is suffering from shortage in health staff, lack of medical devices, and inability of public hospitals to treat a large number of patients. The Sudanese authorities imposed a comprehensive lockdown in Khartoum for a period of three weeks after it recorded the highest number of cases in the country, with a partial curfew in remaining states.
