Lebanon’s General Labor Confederation called on the authorities to monitor the dollar exchange rate and the rise of prices, as well as return bank deposits to their owners. In a statement on Monday, the Confederation said that while the political authority “denies any responsibility in this regard, the Central Bank is blaming the financial authorities, including the Association of Banks”, for the current crisis. It added that the dollar value against the local currency has doubled in less than three months, while the exchange rate was determined in the parallel market and by illegal exchange offices. In its statement, the Confederation held the political class responsible for its “engagement in this deadly game that is threatening the homeland and the citizens.” It also emphasized the role of the government and the financial authority in bringing the situation to this point, “through their mismanagement, squandering, corruption, and complicity.” The Confederation warned that people would take to streets to express their anger and call for their legitimate rights, adding: “Even the coronavirus pandemic will not stop them.”
