A Palestinian was shot dead on Wednesday morning after driving into an Israeli checkpoint and stabbing a border police officer in the West Bank. The man was identified by the Palestinian Authority (PA) as Ibrahim Halsa, 25, from the village of Sawahra. His corpse has been detained by Israeli forces. Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that Halsa drove his vehicle into a border policeman and stabbed him with scissors, adding that officers in the area responded to the attack and shot him. Rosenfeld said the policeman was moderately wounded in the incident near the Jewish settlement of Maale Adumim in the occupied West Bank and that an explosive device was also found at the scene. Israeli police immediately arrested Halsas father for investigation. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) announced the death of Nour Jaber Barghouti, 23, in Israeli occupation jail. Barghouti, who is from Ramallah, was serving his fourth year of an 8-year sentence for resisting the occupation. PPS reported that Barghouti fell unconscious in the bathroom in the Naqab prison, and it took the prison administration more than half an hour to provide him with medical assistance. Israel Prisons Service is fully responsible for Barghouti’s death and for not providing him with immediate assistance, announced PPS. The head of the Palestinian Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees Committee, Qadri Abu Bakr, called out Israel on several violations of Palestinian prisoners’ rights. He said that detainees are subject to torture during interrogations and denied professional medical attention in prisons. A spokesman for the Israeli Prison Authority said in a statement that prison staff were called to check on a prisoner, affiliated with the Fatah movement, who had lost consciousness. He added that the medical teams resuscitated and transferred the prisoner to the hospital for medical treatment after they were able to restore his pulse and maintain good blood pressure. However, the prisoner died later that night in the hospital, and authorities will be investigating the incident, according to the spokesman. Fatah said Israeli occupation authorities are responsible for the martyrdom of Barghouti, adding that this incident shows the intentional medical negligence and poor treatment that Palestinian detainees endure during captivity. Palestinian data shows that Israel holds about 5,000 Palestinian detainees, including 180 children and 40 women. Israel fears resumption of attacks on its soldiers especially after the ramming incident and the death of Barghouti in its prisons. Israel’s Security Service, the Shin Bet, announced that it arrested last month three Palestinians, who were allegedly planning to bomb Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem, as well as another attack in the Ramallah area against a military patrol. A statement said that the detainees had carried out bomb attacks in recent years during clashes with the Israeli army.
