RIYADH: Member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) have celebrated World Intellectual Property Day (World IP Day) under this year’s theme “Innovate for a green future.” Celebrated on April 26 each year, World IP Day aims to educate society about intellectual property (IP), promoting IP"s role in encouraging creativity and enhancing innovation, and addressing common global challenges. By choosing the theme “Innovate for a green future,” the WIPO and its member states are celebrating inventors and creators around the world who work to create innovative solutions to replace old technologies that rely on natural resources with renewable and sustainable modern green technologies. Intellectual property in the Kingdom is sponsored by the Saudi government to enhance the position of innovation and creativity with the aim of promoting economic, social and cultural development through a balanced and effective international IP ecosystem. CEO of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) Dr. Abdulaziz bin Muhammad Al-Swailem said that in light of the coronavirus pandemic and the precautionary measures undertaken by Saudi Arabia, SAIP will contribute this year through its virtual channels to spread awareness among members of society and institutions. This would happen through workshops, educational videos and events for children and adults across SAIP platforms to emphasize IP"s role in encouraging innovation and creativity to contribute to a green future. Saudi Arabia joined the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 1982 and SAIP is represented at WIPO to maintain and develop various intellectual property fields. This is reflected in a positive return on intellectual property activities in Saudi Arabia.
