An estimated 40,000 Palestinians will start crossing over for work, mostly in construction, industry and agriculture. The workers will be required to stay in Israel for at least a month, until the end of Ramadan. The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Labor published the names of workers permitted to return in two days. The Ministry said that 14,500 workers have departed from the West Bank for Israeli territory, amid precautionary measures. Further, the Palestinian Authority agreed with Israel on allowing the entry of 500 workers per hour through specific crossings. Laborers were banned from entering Israel for fears that the novel coronavirus would spread. The workers were a main reason behind the unprecedented hike in infection cases. More than 130,000 Palestinians work in Israel in various sectors, mainly construction. Their monthly outcomes exceed the salaries paid by the Palestinian Authority to its workers. The Palestine Monetary Authority estimates the salaries of workers with permits in settlements and the Green Line at 800 million shekels (USD230 million) per month. Their average yearly income is approximately 9 billion shekels (2.5 billion). Allowing workers to go to Israel falls in line with other measures taken to get the economy back on track.
